"Morning Hideo Kino ." Paxton greeted as he adjusted the strap of his rifle, and gave a quick wave. He hadn't seen the gym leader since the island raid, but he'd kept abreast the news. Coincidentally a possible new avatar, if the relationship fully developed. At the very least, a new asset to the League. 1/3 of the Lake Trio secured and one step closer to the red chain. It's early, but the rangers had reported the most sighting and activity of the strange beast during these hours. He had a hunch it was when it was most active, or perhaps the moment when it was ready to get back to sleep. "How much experience do you have tracking?" he asked before patting a pocket on his sling bag. "Have you had breakfast yet?"

Hideo adjusted the straps of his backpack, only returning the wave when the "Ralts" on his shoulder informed him he'd received one. He was well aware that Paxton was likely informed of Uxie's usual disguise; it was meant more for any prying eyes not already aware Hideo had it.

"Already ate," Hideo answered, "And so did my friend here. Even if they're gonna claim otherwise."

The "Ralts" on his shoulder pouted.

"Can't say I'm that great at tracking - but I got a Pokemon who's great at it." He took out a Pokeball, letting out his Dusk Lycanroc. "Rocky here does that kind of work for me. He's got a better nose than I do."

Among other things.

"So you got an idea about what we're tracking down?"

He eyed the Ralts. freya morningstar 's report of the GYM JAM event had been incredibly detailed, and Hideo's along with Alexei Ivanov 's revelations had been a major point of contention at the very end. He gave the 'Ralts' a small nod and huff of a laugh. The ghost of a smile peaks through. "I've got a pair of always hungry eyes at home too. I get it." he said before looking back at Hideo and then at the rock type. [break][break]

"They're a good tart. Definitely got a better nose than ma as well." he said with a small nod. He turned back to Hideo for a debrief. "Ranger's and officer's alike have had weird siting in the early hours. Found weird scratches and possibly some purple hair tangled amongst branches or in observation point construction rubble." he aid. [break][break]

"We're not 100% sure, but by what people have gathered people, possibly something like a rabid pack of Delcatty or Skunktanks." he said. "Others think it might be, due to the multiple sightings of paradoxes down here, the same thing that appeared in AQUA's last meeting. But until I can put my eyes on it to confirm, I won't believe it." He then turned to take the lead, beginning their trek towards and abandoned observation point. Construction had all but stopped a week ago, but it seemed like there were newer and newer scratched and claw marks every night. [break][break]

The "Ralts" waved to Paxton as it was eyed, a smile on its (illusory) face. "I got a more than a pair," Hideo joked, "My friend here's hardly the only one that can eat way more than their weight in food. But they're definitely the best at it. Never seems to gain any weight either."

It could've eaten way more than a single pizza at the Gym Jam.

Quietly, Hideo listened to Paxton's debrief, trying to pick out what info he could use. "Heard similar stuff from my Gym Trainers," Hideo added. "There's a lotta weird Paradoxes down here. Think I even heard someone mention they saw one that looks like a Raikou, but has a really long neck." He reached up with his hand, as high up as he could, to emphasize the height.

"But I'm sure Rocky here could track down whatever we're looking for, if he can get a good scent. Any idea where our target was last seen? Even just tracks could be enough; my Lycanroc could easily track down a Paradox mon's scent."

"Over there." he said pointing at the abandoned site. It was worse for wear and the reports were true. Walls were knocked over and tone and wood were marked with strange gashes and bite marks. "Something has claimed this as its territory." he explained as they got closer and he began to speculate how recent some of the tracks were. [break][break]

"I'm starting to think of something like Suicune and Raikou have been spotted, there may even be an Entei lookalike." he added with a small nod. [break][break]

"We think this may be something it frequents as it claims territory. If that's the case, simply being here may entice it to attack to defend its own territory." he explained with a small nod. He tossed out his partner, Joule the Magnezone to set up cover just in case. The pokemon floated upward, its multiple eyes scanning the horizon for the mystery pokemon. [break][break]

"Like the Iron Crown pokemon, League would like to try to capture this one for study...but also try to remove it so it stops interfering with observation centers. It's more territorial than normal paradoxes." He said as she heard a strange howl nearby but didn’t quite catch the source. [break][break]

Uxie filled Hideo in on the destruction their quarry had wrought. "Sounds about right," he said. "Heard the Paradoxes here are the fleshy kind, and those tend to be a lot more wild…just hope they aren't as tough as the actual Legendary Beasts."

He knew his Scream Tail was a lot more animalistic than his Iron Valiant. "Though I wouldn't mind catching one myself - whichever one's easier to right on."

"Alright Rocky, do your thing." Hideo pointed to the destruction, even though his Lycanroc was already making its way over, its nose glowing as it put its Odor Sleuth to use trying to find a scent.

"Guess we gotta prep ourselves for when we finally encounter it," Hideo added. "Lotta weird Pokemon popping up Hoenn lately. Not just Paradoxes…"

This whole area was discovered because of Kyurem and Hoopa's antics - heck, who knew what Pokemon would start popping up a month from now? "Feels like it's happening a lot quicker than a couple years ago."

"No, they can be quite...robotic as well. I have a couple." he said with a small nod. Though he didn't pull them out just yet, focused on the task at hand. "From what I heard, they might be a problem. That's why we need to track and subdue it sooner rather than later. Before anybody else gets hurt." he said with a small nod. [break][break]

"Yeah. It does feel like it's ramping up." he said with a small nod. They couldn't catch a break, really. As he watched the Lycanroc move forward, he stayed back with the gym leader instead, not wanting to interfere. Tracking was all well and good, but the Lycanroc relied on smell and he didn't want to interrupt that. [break][break]

His eyes move to the little Ralts on Hideo's shoulder and he broaches the subject, pivoting with practiced ease. "Your Ralts is a rather odd one as well." he aid, keeping it vague for appearances. "Is there a reason you chose to hide it from the League for so long, even threatening one of our own highest?" he said in reference to Melody Miro . His voice is calm, more curious than annoyed. His frustration on the entire thing already vented to freya morningstar and PENELOPE LIVY .

Hideo froze in his tracks as his mind rapidly ran through who could've said he'd threatened them, a chill running through his spine.

John Sullivan and Navy never would've said that; he knew them well enough that they'd probably claim Hideo never threatened them even if he really did. Eva Morales , he trusted wouldn't lie like that to the League.

Which left one person.

Melody Miro . The one person he let tell the League that Uxie was a known factor, and was on the League's side. She'd kept his name out of it, considering nobody talked to him about Uxie until after his own reveal…but to claim that he'd threatened her?

"I never threatened anyone about it," Hideo finally answered. "I was quiet about it 'cause I wasn't in a great spot to make it public knowledge. I was on my own for a while, and I knew if the wrong people found out about it, I didn't have much in the way of staying safe."

He did have more than he let on, and he was sure he could fend off a group trying to nab him on a whim. But the full might of Rocket trying to capture him? He had his limits.

"And I'm not the only person that could be in danger if people wanted to get at me."

"You said, if they revealed your identity to AQUA, you would erase their memory. That's a threat." he said, pulling from the report. It was a rather innocuous moment all things considered, but reading it back it'd stood out. Protection of information in the League was tough, most personnel with access to their highest priority info didn't understand how to keep quiet. [break][break]

Loose lips sink ships and all that. Perhaps they weren't hammering it home hard enough. [break][break]

"Why did you think telling the League would make it public knowledge?" he asked, with another pause. "Did you think the League wouldn't protect you?" he asked, not quite sure seeing the logic. After he was a child, he knew half a dozen agents who would gladly martyr themselves for Hideo. "Surely GYM JAM made it clear you would be placed a high priority," he said. Hideo was a child, yes, but even worse, he was now handling a third of the trio that made the only weapon capable of restraining Necrozma. [break][break]

His attention moves away from the Ralts back down to Hideo, staring keenly. "You're not- you're not in trouble. I just want to know so I can work on ways to prevent this in the future." he added. "This time you got lucky, next time someone could get hurt and we'd have no way of knowing. We can't help, if we don't know what's going on." How many times would he say this to someone?

"And I'm telling you I never said that," he shot back. "They made that part up, probably to give a reason why they didn't fess up about me having…this Ralts." He was gonna have to talk to Melody Miro about being more careful with what she said…which would be weird coming from someone half her age, but this error ended up causing problems.

And if he really wanted to do something like that - there wouldn't be a warning. "And you didn't threaten her, did you, Ralts?" The Ralts shook its head, though it did offer Hideo a glance - it caught the slip-up he'd made, even if Hideo didn't.

"I had to stay quiet because I know people in League've been kidnapped after drawing too much attention to themselves. Even Councilors, even Gym Leaders…even Avatars." He didn't need to list specific cases. "And I know the League knowing about'em would make me a high priority. To everyone. And I know Rocket's not the only ones that might target my family to get at me."

He only had the bare minimum contact with them, but he did care for them. Even after what happened when he got his signatures so he could become a Gym Leader.

He also knew that if he really was in deep trouble with the League, they wouldn't be letting do as much as he was. Perhaps being the one to open up had been a deciding factor in earning their mercy.

Hideo folded his arms. "I was able to keep a lid on having Uxie 'til now. Nobody found out without me telling them."

The first actual lie he'd told; Navy had found out about Uxie by complete accident. But he could bet on Navidson not telling anyone that, if him pretending Gym Jam was where he first found out was still the case.

"I'm more concerned about people getting hurt now that I opened up…but I wasn't getting any closer to learning more about…what's going on by being quiet."

He was close to mentioning Azelf by name, but that error was caught before it came out. He wouldn't be shocked if Paxton already knew about his search for Azelf by now - freya morningstar knew.

His Lycanroc let out a bark - it'd caught a scent. "...sounds like we got a lead."

"What did you say then?" he asked, looking over at the Ralts as if it'd confirm anything for him. "That doesn't make sense Hideo." he countered. "Because people have been kidnapped, you kept this a secret? Why would telling the League automatically mean you would be at risk of kidnapping?" he asked, pressing hard on the conversation. "If you felt so strongly about keeping it a secret, you could've. Raziel Beckett kept his avatarship as a need to know with dahlia goode , and a select few others." he said. "You speak like Alexei Ivanov , as if you're certain there's spies in our ranks or leaks we haven't stopped. And if there is, I need you to tell me about it." And yet, he's not anywhere close to figuring out who else had known about this or who was so suspect their own personnel would hide information from them. [break][break]

"Nobody found out?" he echoed, raising his eyebrows at the kid. Melody Miro of course knew, he had to wonder if anyone else did. Hideo worries about Azelf and Paxton understands. But he doesn't care about that. This is more important. This is a lesson. This is a foundation. The obfuscation of the truth by people who thought they were doing their allies a solid were a thorn in his side. Just as much as those that couldn't keep their mouths shut. [break][break]

"Why did you think telling Commissioner Goode would mean you and everyone you love would be at risk?" He glanced over in the direction of the sound and tossed out a pokeball. His Magnezone flew out, beeping a greeting at Hideo and Uxie politely before turning to Paxton who finally took his eyes off the pair. "Joules, be prepared, we're looking for something nasty." he informed. He turned back to Hideo. "If our own gym leaders can't even trust their own Commissioner with information like your Ralts, then many more people will get hurt. It's vital I help PENELOPE LIVY and Gunner Graves figure out how to better secure the League's intel so this kind of thing doesn't happen again."

Hideo groaned: this was the kind of grilling he was expecting, and just as frustrating as he'd thought it'd be.

"They were trying to get me to come clean on my own. I eventually told them they could mention they know who has Uxie, but to leave my name out…that part about saying I'd make them forget if they did say too much wasn't anything I said. They made that part up."

He didn't want to have to do that to someone.

Hideo quietly listened to Paxton's scoldings - and had his eyes been open, Paxton would've seen the boy's eyes roll. He could've mentioned the other League members he did confide in - but he had a feeling there'd be even worse consequences for them if he did.

"I didn't know. I did know that I got this Ralts right around the same time a Gym Leader got outed as Rocket. And I knew I wasn't part of the League then, so I didn't know if there were others to be careful of. I didn't know if someone I talked to would get my family involved, or try to detain me or something. It's why I had to be careful who I talked to."

"And no, nobody found out. I'm sure of that." He'd been very tight-lipped. "Far as anyone else knows, I just have a weird Ralts."

A small pout found its way onto the "Ralts"'s illusory cheeks.

"I know I need to be more trusting of the League. It's why I came clean during the meeting. Would've stayed a secret if I didn't. I'm sorry for not being honest earlier."

He had a feeling Alexei Ivanov would've stayed quiet about having Tornadus if he hadn't said anything about Uxie.

That's not good enough. Not when the entirety of Hoenn was at risk. Not when chain was the only thing keeping them from total annihilation. Mostly. Necrozma seemed to have been one of the few things they couldn't combat. And now? Galar was all the worse off for it. [break][break]

He resisted the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose. Fucking. Tempest Quinn . How long had it been since Meteno? Hideo brought up detainment and he tilted his head. Maybe Necrozma should've destroyed the continent. [break][break]

"We'd only detain you for helping Rocket." He said frowning incredulously. "Or breaking protocol in a way that endangers yourself and those around you." he looked away, suppressing the thought this branch of conversation would lead him down. "As far as you know, nobody else has found out. Understood." Not that it mattered. Not when Mesprit's own wielder had exposed herself already. Not that it'd helped Eris Halla all that much. Still unaccounted for. Still a problem as much as Azelf was. [break][break]

"As one of Hoenn's gym leaders, you now lead by example. This can't happen again, Hideo." But he doesn't explain why. He didn't need to. This time they were lucky. This time, the trainers with the Lake Trio were safe. Next time, he shuddered to think what'd happen. But then again, all he did was put out fires. Something horrid may as well happen. Joules beeped, calling out for Rocky and floating closer for assistance.

"Well, good news is I haven't done any of that." The only Rocket he'd helped, was no longer in Rocket. And his caution ensured that only he was getting grilled about this right now - nobody else was in danger (except maybe Melody Miro - he could only imagine the conversation Paxton would have with her).

He could merely nod at Paxton's other statement - no way for him to know what he didn't know, after all.

It sounded like he was getting to the point of this scolding. Another hidden eye roll and a quiet sigh as his age was brought up, but he just needed to be open. Not all secrets could be easily shared, and he still had plenty in him. Paxton was still as much as a concern as Hideo saw him on that island.

"Alright," Hideo said, "I'll make sure to be more open from now on." As he'd already promised in the Gym Leader meeting, but maybe Paxton just needed to hear it in-person. "And if it's gotta be super confidential, I'll let Dahlia know quietly."

Hopefully, that was enough to get Paxton off his case for now.

Rocky's barking got his attention, the Lycanroc approaching the two of them. Hideo got the message pretty clearly when it started nudging him in a direction. "Guess we should get back to our main job," Hideo said, a smile reaching his face.

It'd help get him out of this conversation, at least. "Lead the way, Rocky."
